After my doctoral degree from the Technical University in Vienna, Austria, I worked as post-doc with A. J. Freeman at Northwestern University on the FLAPW method. Returning back to Vienna in 1982, I got a permanent faculty position at the University of Vienna in the department of Physical Chemistry, but left in 1985 for an industrial position at the supercomputer company Cray Research in Minnesota, USA. The task was the promotion of supercomputing in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and materials industries. This brought me in close contact with the industrial applications of computational chemistry and materials science and this has been my guideline ever since
